Write a five to eight page essay discussing the research methods used by Nolan and Khan. Describe and compare the two authors’ methods using terminology from the readings and lectures. Identify the different communities in both books. Discuss why a researcher might choose to use those approaches for their topics. Consider what other methods might have been used instead to learn about these specific communities. Discuss the pros and cons of alternative approaches to the research project. • Read Police in the Hallways by Kathleen Nolan and Privilege by Shamus Khan paying special attention to their research methods. • Write an essay discussing the following: o Which communities the authors researched  Identify all the different communities, not just the students.  Identify any communities that are missing but potentially important for the authors’ inquiries.  Discuss why the authors may have chosen to exclude those missing communities. o Research methods o How could the authors have learned about the same communities using different methods?  There are many different types of qualitative methods. Do you think they would have learned anything different from using different methods?  How did they learn about the communities? What did they do to recall what happened? How did they build rapport? etc.  Use terminology and concepts from the readings and lectures.  Consider the purpose and strengths, as well as the challenges and drawbacks, of using qualitative methods. Points are awarded for using terminology and concepts introduced in the lectures and readings (4pts). Points are awarded for using specific examples from Police in the Hallways and Privilege (1pt). Points are awarded for identifying the included and excluded communities (2pts) and critically assessing how the authors learned about the communities (3pts). Points are awarded for considering alternative methods for learning about communities (3pts). 4 points for writing quality: Points are awarded for thoughtfully chosen words, clear phrasing, complete sentences and very few grammatical errors. Points are deducted for multiple errors, unclear writing, and redundancies. 8 points for organization of ideas: Points are awarded for seamless . The essay should be logically sequenced; there should be no explanation necessary to understand the flow of the paper.
